Police confiscated a driver's licence belonging to a Brighton-Le-Sands man, 43, after he was allegedly caught driving at 219 km/h in a high-performance Mercedes-Benz.

Goulburn's highway patrol stopped the man near Collector at 9.30am yesterday and charged him with speeding in a dangerous manner and speeding by more than 45 km/h.

He had been driving a silver SL55 AMG convertible powered by a supercharged V8 engine.

BBC Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson once owned the same model.

The Brighton-Le-Sands man will face Goulburn Local Court on March 31.
