A Miranda man has appeared at Sutherland Local Court today charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one of detaining a person for advantage.
Robert Mariage, 48, allegedly detained a woman after first approaching her claiming to be an English teacher in January, police prosecutor Sergeant Andrew Brown said as he read out the police facts sheet.
Mariage allegedly asked the woman to come and live at his house and he would teach her English.
The woman left Australia and then returned on Monday.
Mariage was waiting for her at the airport and they had coffee.
The police prosecutor was interrupted at this stage by Mariage's legal aid solicitor who then conferred with his client.
Mariage had tried unsuccessfully to contact a private solicitor and had been unable to do so and wished to continue to make such contact.
Bail was not applied for and was formally refused. Magistrate Jacqueline Trad adjourned the matter to Cental Local Court tomorrow where Mariage will appear by audiovisual link.
