A west side story of '50s gangs

10 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
ENGADINE Musical Society is performing West Side Story, the 1950s musical twist on Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet.

Tony, a member of an established white gang, the Jets, falls in love with Maria, whose brother is a member of the rival Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks.

The Jets are contemptuous of the Sharks and look down on them as foreign newcomers, while the Sharks want to establish themselves as Americans and defend their territory.

The cast includes Kyle Sapsford as Tony, Elise Sawley as Maria, Sean Atkins as Riff, Lauren Macready as Anita, Steve Hart as Bernado, and Chris Malliate as Chino.

The show opens at Sutherland Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, October 14, at 8pm.

Other performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (October 15, 16, 17) at 8pm, with a matinee on Saturday and Sunday (October 17 and 18) at 2pm.

Tickets are $35/$30/$25. A fee of $2 applies to each booking: 95481480.

On Thursday, October 15, there is a special school student offer. Students with valid IDs will receive a B reserve ticket for $20, a saving of $5.
