AN alliance of environmental groups claiming to represent "thousands" has written to Heathcote MP Lee Evans and State Environment Minister Robyn Parker to demand water catchment areas be excluded from coal seam gas mining zones in Wollondilly and the Illawarra.
The alliance, which includes representatives from the National Parks Association, Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, Otford Echo and the North Illawarra Sustainability Alliance (NISA), wants a meeting with Ms Parker and Premier Barry O'Farrell on the issue.
They have also called upon Mr Evans to oppose coal seam gas mining in the Woronora catchment.
"We want to ask Lee Evans who he is listening to who says this is a good idea?" said Phil Smith from Sutherland Shire Community Centre. Mr Smith said the alliance would organise community meetings on the issue in the coming weeks.
In his inaugural speech to parliament on June 2, Mr Evans said he was aware there were "great concerns" in his electorate about methane gas exploration.
"The water source for the Illawarra and Sutherland shire must be protected. I will represent the many concerns of my constituents and make their voices heard," Mr Evans said at the time.
Mr Evans said last week that "under no circumstances" would he support any activity which compromised Sydney's water systems.
However, he stopped short of saying he opposed coal seam gas mining in the Woronora; nor did he say he opposed the current mining license to explore the area.
"The licences granted by the previous Labor government are for exploration only," Mr Evans said.
He said the government had begun strengthening the regulation and assessment of impacts on water resources and would continue to increase projections.
NISA spokesman Peter Turner said it was astounding that the government prevented the public from entering water catchment areas, but allowed mining companies.
Should Lee Evans oppose mining in the Woronora catchment?
