Environmental group seeks answers

09 Aug, 2011 05:00 PM
AN alliance of environmental groups claiming to represent "thousands" has written to Heathcote MP Lee Evans and State Environment Minister Robyn Parker to demand water catchment areas be excluded from coal seam gas mining zones in Wollondilly and the Illawarra.

The alliance, which includes representatives from the National Parks Association, Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, Otford Echo and the North Illawarra Sustainability Alliance (NISA), wants a meeting with Ms Parker and Premier Barry O'Farrell on the issue.

They have also called upon Mr Evans to oppose coal seam gas mining in the Woronora catchment.

"We want to ask Lee Evans who he is listening to who says this is a good idea?" said Phil Smith from Sutherland Shire Community Centre. Mr Smith said the alliance would organise community meetings on the issue in the coming weeks.

In his inaugural speech to parliament on June 2, Mr Evans said he was aware there were "great concerns" in his electorate about methane gas exploration.

"The water source for the Illawarra and Sutherland shire must be protected. I will represent the many concerns of my constituents and make their voices heard," Mr Evans said at the time.

Mr Evans said last week that "under no circumstances" would he support any activity which compromised Sydney's water systems.

However, he stopped short of saying he opposed coal seam gas mining in the Woronora; nor did he say he opposed the current mining license to explore the area.

"The licences granted by the previous Labor government are for exploration only," Mr Evans said.

He said the government had begun strengthening the regulation and assessment of impacts on water resources and would continue to increase projections.

NISA spokesman Peter Turner said it was astounding that the government prevented the public from entering water catchment areas, but allowed mining companies.

Should Lee Evans oppose mining in the Woronora catchment?

Story refers to National Parks Association branches joining with 10 community groups in sending a detailed letter to Ministers and Lee Evans, calling for CSG exclusion zones in the Illawarra and Wollondilly and requesting meetings. Groups include the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, Sutherland Climate Action Network, Stop CSG in the Illawarra, Rivers SOS and the Lock the Gate Alliance. The call is made in the interest of water security, biodiversity and habitat protection. The letter (with pictures) is available here:

An exclusion zone for the Illawarra and Wollondilly areas is the only way to ensure our water is protected. These groups represent the voice of many of your constituents, Mr Evans, so represent us properly and make sure our voice is heard. No CSG mining in our water catchment areas, ever!

Ditto to the above comments. I really think we need to completely ban any mining in water catchment areas and environmentaly sensative areas full stop! What will we tell our children when there is only contaminated water left to drink when the ground cracks and wells rust out and leak and contaminate our water supply and we did'nt do anything about it. Please do something now Lee Evans for our future. thank you

As has been said many times in the past it is absolute lunacy that I can be substantially fined and/or jailed for just walking in the catchment area BUT mining companies can drill there (and clear land to do so). Mining companies are unable to guarantee no contamination because there is significant inherent risk associated with this practice. Lee Evans, please wake up and smell the coffee. Short term profit can never be an adequate recompense for long term environmental damage or even the risk thereof.

Money talks, that's all politicians care about. Haven't they seen or heard what's happened in Qld and in the USA where CSG mining occurs. Vandalism of the environment and water. No CSG mining in our water catchment areas, ever!

It is absolute madness to allow this in any water catchment, just one incident has the potential to contaminate our water supply with dire consequences to the community. All for the profit of a few. We don't need any more fossil fuels, we should be directing our energy towards truly renewable sources of energy like solar and wind.

Carbon Energy is a outdated, what about green energy? Yet, they want to charge us a Carbon Tax!!! Put a stop to Coal Seam Gas Mining, how dare we take anymore from this planet, let alone take a risk with the source of live WATER! What are they going to do when it's polluted or contamined...I hope the GOVT can put their money where their mouth is. C'mon Australia, we know this CSG mining has too many risks, look at other countries that have had trouble with it and are still ironing out problems.. France is a leader because they banned it... Take Note Australia!!

I cannot believe the stupidity of mining (or exploring) in water catchment areas. An exclusion zone needs to be established for the Woronora and Wollondilly catchments. If the government represents the people then it must protect the most necessary source for life - water. Mr. Evans must act now, and the govenment should also act to ban CSG exploration on all farming lands. Our environment is more important than profits.

CSG is an issue where an approach of safety first must apply. We have to proactively assess the risks involved BEFORE any development occurs, otherwise we'll end up with contaminated water, huge remediation costs and a blight on our local environment. On current evidence, it is TOO RISKY to go ahead with development.
