$65m for infrastructure, capital works

20/05/2008 6:10:00 PM
SUTHERLAND Shire Council has passed its draft 2008-09 budget with almost $65 million to be spend on infrastructure and capital works.

Mayor David Redmond said the budget was focused on delivering projects planned during the council's four-year term but was criticised by Liberal councillors at last week's meeting for ``pork-barrelling''.

The $224 million budget included funding for several ongoing programs and the completion of major projects such as the Cronulla community facilities, the first nine holes of the Ridge Golf Course, construction of Gunnamatta and Bundeena wharves and upgrades to a number of community buildings, leisure facilities and parks, playgrounds and reserves.

Cr Redmond said that although the council was in a strong financial position, repairing storm damage to the Prince Street sea wall would be costly.

``(There are) several major projects which require significant funding and more than $4 million (is) required to fund repairs to the Prince Street sea wall,'' he said.

``The council expected to receive dollar for dollar funding from the State Government, but has so far only received $500,000.''

Cr Redmond said the council had worked hard to reduce its debt but dismissed criticism from some councillors that borrowing planned for this budget would be dangerous.

``This budget fulfils many of the commitments that this council has made over the past four years,'' Cr Redmond said.

``The council has worked hard to significantly reduce its debt in recent years and is now in a strong position which will enable it to borrow conservatively to ensure that much-needed projects across the shire can occur.''
