Anti-coal gas lobby slams MP on mining

23 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
THE political honeymoon is over for Heathcote MP Lee Evans following his refusal to support a moratorium on coal seam gas mining to protect the Woronora catchment.

Lobby group Stop CSG Illawarra, which is campaigning for a moratorium ahead of a royal commission, said Mr Evans should "stand up for his community".

However, Mr Evans has replied that he could not assume any group represented the views of the entire electorate.

Stop CSG Illawarra spokeswoman Jess Moore said that Mr Evans had mentioned in a meeting with him this month that he, too, had his concerns about coal seam gas mining.

However, he had also said gas was a necessary fuel and he would not oppose approved drilling — including in the drinking water catchment, despite the known risks.

The government had adequately informed the community of its position, he had said.

Ms Moore said the group was campaigning to protect drinking water, the environment and public health from well-documented damage from coal seam gas mining.

"Going with the status quo amounts to backing the mining companies and opposing the community," she said.

EVANS RESPONDS

Lee Evans said he had given an assurance he would consider the group’s advice, along with that of experts in the departments of environment, resources and energy.

‘‘I am committed to consider and represent the interests of everyone in my electorate, from private residents to members of organised activist groups,’’ he said.

‘‘Some of my constituents are understandably concerned about coal seam gas mining in their local areas and I have relayed their concerns to the relevant ministers.

‘‘I cannot assume that any group represents the views of the entire electorate.’’

Mr Evans said the previous government in 2009 had granted an exploration licence in the Illawarra scheduled to expire in 2014.

The Coalition government was ‘‘not in the business of retracting legally binding licences’’, nor had it granted any new extraction licences at this stage.

‘‘If an extraction licence application is received in the future it will be subjected to the most rigorous environmental risk assessment ever conducted in NSW,’’ he said.

Do you agree with Mr Evans' view on coal seam gas mining?

mr evans .. i am disugusted that you think this is ok. you were voted in (not by me) to our electorate and should know people in this electorate do not want this drilling. its as simple as that. go out and speak to the people.

Mr Evan's position seems at odds with the recent statement from Minister Hartcher "Under no circumstances will the Government allow our water systems to be compromised." Without doubt CSG poses a serious threat to the integrity of water catchments and aquifers.

A letter calling for CSG exclusion zones in the Illawarra and Wollondilly was sent yesterday to Mr Evans and government ministers. The letter and its call is supported by National Parks branches and a number of community groups including Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, Stop CSG in the Illawarra, RiversSOS and Lock the Gate.

NO-ONE, not even hydrogeologists, knows the effect this will have on our drinking water.

Even if carcinogenic chemicals aren't injected in the fracking process, they are naturally present in the coam seam and fracking will liberate them.

Whatever happened to the precautionary principle? What about leaving some fossil fuel resources for future generations?

If we need gas, then why aren't we producing renewable biogas from waste products that at present we have to pay to dispose of?

Bring on the carbon tax - it will switch the incentives from this damaging industry to renewables.

Mr Evans,

Please be assured that everyone is concerned about their drinking water. What happens here in Darkes Forest affects the whole electorate as it affects the electorate's drinking water. Shame on you for not standing up for the people. No, not just the people, but the local environment as well.

Very disappointed Minister Evans. What a shame you didn't express that view prior to March 26.

Mr Evans would do well to remember who he represents and who will unceremoniously dump him if he fails to represent them.

Another follower masquerading as a leader.

You clearly believe in yourself above the electorate Mr Evans.

You are not fit to lead those who have placed their trust in you.

I do wonder what Lee Evans will do should the drinking water catchment becomes poisoned? Will he lead by example by drinking it by the gallon?

I'm still waiting to hear from Lee Evans and the premier over the concerns I have raised on the low levels of the Woronora Dam. Just this morning (Sat 23) I went out to see how all the rain, about 200mils over the last few days had done to the dam level. In comparison photos taken 20 days ago, to the 23 Sat, the level had risen at least 3 metres! Trouble is they are still letting out the environmental flows despite all the rain! other people were out there to see how full it was too. Do we really need gas mining in the catchments or drinking water instead?

By now Lee Evans would have received the reasons behind a call for exclusions on coal seam gas mining in the drinking water catchments, State Conservation Areas and unprotected bush along the green corridors between Royal National Park and the Illawarra. NPA urges Mr Evans to take the time to read reasons why 10 representative groups in his electorate have endorsed this call. The fact that Mr Evans refuse to stand up for our local environment and instead would support acknowledged risky drilling in water catchments defies belief. We expect a more principled stance from an elected politician.
