Award honours Sandra Harvey

17 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
A CATEGORY has been added to the Ned Kelly literary awards in memory of the late crime writer Sandra Harvey.

The former Caringbah resident died of cancer in January 2008. She was a well-known crime reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Associated Press.

Harvey reported, researched and produced reports for ABC Television's Four Corners.

She began her journalism career in the mid-1980s at the old Pictorial News at Kirawee, a paper later bought by the Leader. Harvey was the author or co-author five books on famous crimes.

The SD Harvey Ned Kelly Award will be for short stories in the crime writing genre, either crime fiction or creative non-fiction.

The Sydney Morning Herald, Four Corners and the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance are sponsors of the prize.

Ms Harvey's sister Susan Harvey, who lives at Dolans Bay, said it was good to know her sister's name would live on.

"We are so proud of her and it's great to know all her hard work wasn't in vain,'' Susan Harvey said.
