WATER police retrieved the body of a man found off the coast of Kurnell earlier this morning.
Police said the body had not been in the water for long and are working to identify the deceased.
Botany Bay Water police Senior Sergeant Brett Prentice said police are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage but believe it may have been an accidental drowning.
The caucasian man, believed to be in his early 50s, was found by a commercial vessel about one kilometre from Cape Solander about 11am.
‘‘We don’t have anyone missing so we really don’t really know what happened," Senior sergeant Prentice said. "Someone looking for a loved might come forward.
‘‘It doesn’t appear the person has been in the water for a long time."
The man was wearing shorts and a black jacket at the time his body was found but police said he had no identification.
Police conducted a search of nearby cliffs in a bid to find clues to indicate where the man had fallen into the water from.
Marine area command detectives are investigating and appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
