THE 2008 Lifeline Sutherland Book Fair has raised a record $59,000 for people in need.
About 3500 people attended the fair, which was held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre on July 12 and 13 to raise money for Lifeline's telephone counsellor training program.
More than 100,000 books went on sale and about 1600 individual purchases were made over the two days.
The single largest transaction totalled $1400.
Outgoing book fair co-ordinator, Geoff Gardner, said more books were sold this year than ever before.
He said all rare and signed books were sold within hours of the fair opening.
The fair, now in its ninth year, raised $14,000 more than last year.
A number of Sutherland Shire community groups volunteered at the event and Sutherland Shire Council waived the hire fee for the entertainment centre.
Any leftover books will be carried over to next year's fair.
