 Brethren Church project concerns residents

Brethren Church project concerns residents

12 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
RESIDENTS are opposing a plan by the Exclusive Brethren church to build a $1.27 million meeting hall and subdivide six residential blocks in Forum Drive, Heathcote.

The 2.35-hectare block is located between the two cul-de-sacs of Forum Drive north and south and was sold to the church by Landcom by public tender in 2009.

Brethren spokesman Warwick John said the new hall would replace the church’s existing hall in Rosebery Street, Heathcote, which it has used since 1974.

The proposed 645-square-metre hall will cater for between 25 and 400 people at normal weekly and monthly services, although it will be able to hold up to 900 worshippers on rare occasions.

The six residential blocks will be sold.

Residents are angry at the January 19 deadline for public submissions.

‘‘We don’t care who operates the land, but this is about the Heathcote community’s concerns at an inappropriate development,’’ residents’ spokesman Warren Lane said.

They are concerned about extra traffic and the safety of residents and visitors in the event of bushfire.

‘‘There is just going to be too much traffic in the area,’’ Mr Lane said.

‘‘There is significant concern at the impact of a large development on the surrounding bushland. It’s an area that has been used by the public since the area was opened up 40 years ago.’’

Mr Lane urged residents to write to their councillors calling for more time for submissions.

Cr Bruce Walton is also concerned at the effect on traffic and potential bushfires.

‘‘Historically, when there has been bushfire activity, it has come through this area,’’ Cr Walton said.

‘‘Even though the church has a bushfire plan to extract people they will still have difficulty getting through, given the narrowness of the roads,’’ Cr Walton said.

Mr John said a private road through the site will remain open to emergency vehicles and neighbours during a bushfire alert.

‘‘If there is a bushfire alert, the council has been advised we would cancel all meetings at the church.

‘‘We appreciate the concerns of locals about possible additional traffic as church members have long been part of the Engadine-Heathcote community,’’ he said.

‘‘Every Sunday morning a small congregation travelling in about 10 cars will attend the hall for a 6am service.

‘‘Every third Sunday at 10.30am, between 300 and 400 people, travelling in no more than 100 cars, will attend a 90-minute service. ‘‘A similar number will attend a 7.45pm service every Thursday.

‘‘A service for 900 people may be held no more than once every three years. It is only a seldom occasion.’’

What do you think of the proposal to build the new church meeting hall?

Residents have started a website heathcoteresidents.org.au opposing the development.

Let's be clear about a few things. If this goes through without restrictions on a seating hall of 900 they can have meetings with growing crowds at any time despite their current attendance and meetings. The facts are that they are growing and intending to have bigger events otherwise you would not leave a 500 seat venue to build a 900 seat venue for one meeting every three years! Let's be honest here.

Even 100 cars driving up and down Forum Drive will create problems. Check out yourself how small the roads are surrounding.

I'm shocked they want to do this for their own people.

As if it's not difficult enough for just one car to turn right into Heathcote Rd from Forum Dr on a busy Sunday! Imagine the mayhem when dozens of them try this manoevre. And the Council should not close submissions during the holidays...many residents will be denied their say on this.

This new church is a result of a growing congregation, so the numbers they gave won't stay so small. The traffic would increase over time, traffic lights would become necessary at the Forum Drive/ Heathcote Rd intersection, causing traffic buildup at the lights in the neighbourhood. Even if large attendences are rare, they would still be a significant disruption to occur in a quiet residential area.

This is a monstrosity of a building creating a a problem in a small neighborhood community.

The fact that Sutherland Shire Council would even consider allowing this type of application to be made is an abhorrent decision.

Unimaginable damage will be made to the lives of the Heathcote Residents, Bushland and not to mention the loss of quality of life to the immediate and future residents.

The whole Shire should be outraged and seriously concerned at the lack of consideration the council must of made to its residents. Hopefully commonsense prevails here.

Exclusive Brethren? sounds like another group ie the Baptists at Bangor with the Innaburra School Performing Arts Centre - 650 seats and not one car space in an already overcrowded suburban street, thumbing their noses at Sutherland Council and local residents. Ignore the complaints of locals who were there long before these groups arrived.

Forum Drive is a difficult road to enter/exit already, especially dangerous at Heathcote Road. Watch people duck for cover with the first fatality. Heathcote is residential, bush friendly and proud of it. Let's refuse this development.

I see it mostly a whinge against the Christians. Much is today. Many dont like us because we preach the consequences of sin and the need for a Saviour. Yet when we invite Jesus into our lives we find such wonderful peace:)

GGibson - you are completely missing the point - this has NOTHING to do with religion - the sheer scale of this compound and the amount of traffic it will generate on small suburban streets is beyond comprehension -it will be directly responsible for loss of life at some time in the future from a car accident because of increased traffic that is completely inappropriate for the area - surely your Saviour wouldn't be happy and at peace with that! How would you like hundreds of cars driving past your bedroom window at 5:30am when you normally only hear birds singing?

GGibson - I am a Christian and I disagree with your comment. It is not about religion and to assume so is incorrect. The issue is simple; the development is huge (facilities for 900!) and not keeping with the character of the area. There are issues around traffic, environment fire safety. The general public will not be able to go here to learn about Jesus - it won't be open to the general public and it will be gated and fenced.

Well...I think its much to do with how some of the media presented the Brethren. Not all of the media of course. Its the Brethrens' choice to remain apart from other churches. It may not be healthy but its their choice. We shouldnt fear them. All are Christ's children...who call on Him. Council hasnt approved it yet. Lets wait and see. I personally think the Kirrawee brickpits was a far worse decision.

As heathcote resident says, since when did Jesus have barbed wire fences security cameras, private roads and no public access. Not what Christian teaching is supposed to be about. It is plainout overdevelopement that is the concern here, wiping out more than two hectres of bushland and desroying wildlife habitat so close to Heathcote N.P. The shire is slowly losing all the bushland it was renowned for. It is another disaster in waiting just like the West Menai housing proposal. Yes GOD help the Shire and the residents of Heathcote.
