KOGARAH Council is unlikely to hold a byelection in the wake of councillor Col Ritchie's death.
Cr Ritchie died last week after a long struggle with cancer.
He had served with the council for more than 15 years and was a key part of its traffic management program.
Kogarah mayor Nickolas Varvaris said the council would discuss the possibility of a byelection and that he would argue against it.
"I don't think, in my view, that it's prudent to do such a thing," Cr Varvaris said.
"My view is, being nine months out from an election, it would be a bit of a waste of ratepayers' money.
"It's probably going to take three or four months to organise, it would probably cost ratepayers about $50,000 to $100,000 to do that."
NSW local government elections will be held on September 8 this year.
An Elections NSW spokesman said the council was not required to host a byelection.
The Local Government Act does not require vacancies to be filled if elected representatives leave "within 18 months before the date specified for the next ordinary election of the councillors".
