Cafe ban on dogs raises ire - tell us what you think

SUTHERLAND Shire Council's decision to enforce the Food Standards Code which bans animals from outdoor cafes has dog owners barking mad.

The move has so incensed Cronulla resident Cheryl Brown, whose weekend ritual includes a walk in the park with her dog Max, followed by breakfast at Parlos in Cronulla Mall, that she organised a petition and spent a couple of hours on Saturday morning collecting signatures.

A spokesperson said the council was not "banning'' anything, merely enforcing the Code after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.

It wrote reminding cafe owners in the mall - the ban does not apply elsewhere in the shire - on October 1 of their obligations under the law and of the penalties for non-compliance - fines of $55,000 for the cafe and $330 for the pet owners.

The cafe owners are complying with the notice but it is costing them as much as $700 to $800 a day, according to some estimates.

Parlos cafe manager Chris Parias, who put out water and treats and prepared puppy-cinos for his canine clients, said his staff were under strict instructions not to touch the dogs and to ask owners of boisterous or noisy pets to leave.

He said some of the owners he had asked to leave had become irate and he estimated he was losing eight to 10 customers a day on week days and twice that number on weekends.

Nigel Urquhart, who owns Strawberry Fair directly across the Mall from Parlos, said: "We liked having the dogs around and were careful not to allow them near the food preparation area.

"But we have to abide by the rules.

"Once people understand what the rules are we hope they will come back again.''

Robert Schroeder, from Stonefish, said he had never had a complaint from the public about dogs in the outdoor area.

"Cronulla is all about fitness and getting outdoors,'' he said.

"This is just punishing those people who do the right thing.''

Should people be able to take their dogs to outdoor cafes?

Disgust is an emotion that is typically associated with things that are regarded as unclean, inedible, infectious, or otherwise offensive. Possibly you're confusing the dogs with the pigeons!!

My owner takes me to the cafe on Saturdays. I hate it. The people are loud and frighten me. Sometimes I even get ashed on by the smokers at the next table. Sometimes I'm lucky to get a scrap, but mostly I get hot coffee dripped on me. I wish I was at home or at a leash-free park.

I've sat in a cafe in the Plaza and watched while a dog (being walked on a lead) was allowed to stop and urinate on the plastic awnings beside my seat. The owner then wanted to argue and tell me to 'lighten up'. If there's food being served in a commercial environment, they should be banned, sorry. And, for goodness sake, if you're walking your dog on a lead, spare a thought for others. My experience was the equivalent of me bringing a dog into your house and letting it pee on your dining room floor.

Is it really a normal human reaction to object so vehemently to a canine being near our food ? I suppose it would be considered normal, unless, heaven forbid, we are sight challenged, and require a guide dog, or suffering a disability and require an assistance dog, or are living in assisted care for being fragile, aged or a dementia sufferer and are fortunate enough to receive a visit from a Pets As Therapy dog. Or simply just benefit from the company of one of man's best friends.

My dog is a lot cleaner and better behaved than some humans I know. It's all about respecting other people and keeping your pet under control. I'd rather eat outdoors with a well-behaved canine underfoot than an inconsiderate smoker polluting my airspace.

Pardon the pun Sam. But i don't want to eat near every man and his dog. But let's not go overboard - how many times have you seen these people down Cronulla? I love dogs, i am a dog person. I own them. Not every dog owner is responsible and not every dog can be trusted to behave. There is obviously a market for this sort of thing and i think that business should be able to cater this need, however somewhere busy like Cronulla mall is NOT the place.

Good point Sam. The important difference is that the highly trained, dedicated animals you refer to are trained to not pee next to people eating at a cafe in Cronulla - or anywhere else for that matter.

I'm sick of people whingeing about dogs. Europeans are civilised enough to treat their dogs as companions worthy of joining them in a multitude of places so why not us? We adopt dogs into our families they are great loyal companions and on the whole dog owners are responsible people and pick up after them and keep them under control. I wish the complainers would find something better to do. Maybe they'd be well served to get a pet - give them something more to do than whinge.

Sam the ban does not apply to Assistance Dogs with their disabled owners. Assistance Dogs are allowed just about everywhere the normal public is allowed, including 'no pets' areas.
