BILL Ryan, 87, of Caringbah, will be among an expected 400 people who will attend the three day Climate Camp '09 event starting tomorrow at Helensburgh.
The event, run on solar power, has been organised by environmentalists, students, workers, parents and seniors.
Mr Ryan said that he was concerned about future generations.
"If something is not done, the world will be in a calamatious condition. We have to stop fossil-fuel pollution by the coal industry,'' he said.
Mr Ryan's son, Colin Ryan, 61, of Kirrawee, will accompany him.
The younger Mr Ryan said he was frustrated by lack of action.
"Despite scientists across the planet shouting warnings about the impending climate catastrophe, our politicians have proved themselves incapable of taking action,'' the younger Mr Ryan said.
"I am attending (the Climate Camp) to send a clear message to Prime Minister Rudd to take decisive action at the world climate talks in Copenhagen this December.''
Environment groups including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, the Climate Action Networks of Sutherland and Wollongong are among the organisers of the event.
Sutherland Climate Action Network convener Jonathan Doig said the camp promoted climate sustainable living with the focus of its workshops, art and music on ``the urgent need to move beyond coal''.
Climate Camp aims to inform the public and former coalminers, scientists, field experts and traditional owners about regional coal production.
It will examine how catchments and river systems are affected by mines and how to provide incomes for mining communities.
Police have warned there will be zero tolerance of antisocial behaviour during the three-day gathering.
Climate Camp '09 is on Dharawal land, at Helensburgh Park off Robertson Street from tomorrow to Sunday, with no charge. Donations are suggested at $5 a day.
