Concerns grow for Bretheren church hall plan

26 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
THE deadline for public submissions on the development application by the Exclusive Brethren to build a $1.27 million church hall in Forum Drive, Heathcote, has been extended to January 31.

Residents expressed concern that the application was lodged on December 22 giving a deadline of January 19 for submissions while many were on holiday. Heathcote resident Robyn Stringfellow was overseas when the application was lodged and was not able to see all the details until she returned on January 13, less a week before the deadline.

The 645-square-metre hall will be set back from Forum Drive and cater for between 35 and 400 people in a given month, with on-site parking for 129 cars.

Vehicular access to the hall will be via either Forum Drive north or south. It will be able to care for up to 900 worshippers on rare occasions.

Heathcote residents have formed the Committee Against Inappropriate Development in their Community to oppose the development.

Warren Lane said the main concerns were the bush fire risk and people's safety in an evacuation.

"Traffic will be increased within the Forum Drive area, and egress onto Heathcote Road is a major concern," Mr Lang said. "We cannot understand why a development is required for a 900-person facility which may occur "on rare occasions".

He urged residents to make submissions by January 31.

An Exclusive Brethren statement said the church planned to build a private road through the site which it believed would significantly improve bushfire safety in the area.

The road, providing access to the meeting hall, could be used by emergency vehicles and residents in the event of a bushfire.

Sutherland Shire Council plans to hold an information day on the proposal at a date to be set.

The proposal has generated a lot of comment on the Leader website, much of it citing residents' traffic concerns over the proposal, and little to do with religious considerations (see linked story).

Kevin R Jacobson posted: "This has nothing to do with religion or a church group wanting a place to gather. It's a free country. The problem is the 900-seat venue and the impact on fire evacuation; traffic flow; impact on quiet neighbours and streets and impact on bushland."

Bushman Sam posted: "If you read the Sutherland Shire LEP, it's hard to argue that this proposal doesn't comply with the zoning. The proposal is for a place of worship which is sympathetic to the bushland environment. If the council rejects the proposal it will most likely end up in the Land and Environment Court. The LEC will probably approve it on merit. The people who drafted the LEP had Catholic and Anglican churches in mind when they included "Places of Worship" in the Environmental Housing Zone."

What do you think of the proposal to build the new church hall at Heathcote?

First this 'Public Place of Worship' was going to be used for the 900 'worshipers' once a year then once every three years now on 'rare' occassions. Which is it? If you only want it for 'rare' occassions there is no need for this monstrosity to be built. Hire a hall somewhere else for your 'rare' meetings of 900 people.

Since the first leader article a couple of weeks ago we've had one accident on the Heathcote Road and one on the Princes Highway blocking Dalley Road. How can a development between two major blackspot roads in a small residential area of cul der sacs with a history of bushfires be appropriate? How do you fight bushfires through high wire fences? A safer site is needed with better access that can more sensibly accomodate another 900 people as needed.

The 'reproduction' of Bushman Sam's anonymised opinion took 1/5th of this article's page space. Now let's not forget that when posted online it ACTUALLY completed with the punchline "This loophole has backfired massively."

Beefing up this latest article with comments from the comment section of a previous Leader article is one thing but misappropriating content with editorially introduced bias so flagrantly is another.

Poor form from The Leader.

This proposed huge edifice will severely and negatively impact Heathcote, Engadine and the Shire in general. It will exacerbate the already-existing bushfire risk, increase by 100's the vehicle load on narrow streets, place further pressure on Heathcote Road, and have an adverse effect on native flora and fauna, Please do not let this inappropriate development go ahead. NodevelopmentPLEASE.

If the church is in need of a approx 900 seat capacity meeting place for the 'rare occasion' then hire the Sutherland Entertainment Centre. It's close to the railway station and bus transport, has access on both sides with parking areas already built, is not surrounded by private homes where the neighbours will be impacted upon and is not bordering a high risk bushfire zone putting peoples lives at risk. Make use of existing facilities not build one in an inappropriate place.

I just had a look on Youtube.com of the 3D rotating view of the Exclusive Bretheren, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pLk0-wBPE0&feature=youtu.be

These guys pay no tax, but the rest of us do. The previously National Park has been sold to them (cheaply), when they sell the 6 blocks of land they will have a handy profit (No Tax). How does one start a Church to get around paying tax. Contact Sutherland Council and nip this one in the bud Now!

Rumours are going around that Sutherland Council have already decided to give the go ahead with this development. Is this a ploy to try and deter the residents from protesting? Don't believe until we are told officially.

Come on Sutherland Shire Council. Surely you can see this development is inappropriate and must look after your constituents. Bushfire risk, increase in traffic, privacy, threat to local wildlife. All very important and relevant issues in our community. You have a number of loyal, long term residents living in the surrounding streets. These residents have been there since the area was developed. Do the right and support the locals. Their safety and wellbeing are at risk.

Be noble and let it happen. People have to live and relate in many types of fellowships... somewhere.

As a longtime local resident the traffic & bushfire risks are obvious. I cannot understand why the current facility is inadequate with a capacity of 500. Other church groups building such a large capacity facility choose somewhere like an industrial or commercial area where the church night time & weekend activities do not impact on the weekday users of the area. Council should not approve this development application.
