Crime fighting hits water

31 Dec, 2008 04:00 AM
BOAT owners and waterfrontage residents will soon receive information packs promoting maritime security.

Ten thousand of the waterproof bags containing advice on securing boats, tips on reporting crime, and leaflets featuring security products like DataDot spray will be issued.

Inspector Glenn Finniss, from the marine area command, said: ``We'll be handing them them out when breath testing, and on piers.

``It's a Crime Stoppers and maritime safety initiative.''

The ``Keep Safe'' bags will mainly be distributed on Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay and Pittwater and brochures will be mailed to all boat owners, licence holders, waterfront households, marine berth and mooring holders in the state. Crime Stoppers CEO Peter Price said the key message of the pamphlets included advice for contacting police and tips for safe boating.

``This is the first major initiative for Crime Stoppers aimed at reducing marine crime and increasing marine safety,'' he said.

``There are quite a few crimes we're targeting, including the theft of vessels, stealing from vessels, fisheries crimes as well as drug and gun smuggling.''
