Cronulla Fisheries staff ''last ditch attempt'' to meet Minister

09 Feb, 2012 11:44 AM
Fifty workers from the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre travelled by bus to Yass today in the hope of meeting Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson.

They will visit Ms Hodgkinson’s electorate office after receiving no reply to three requests for a meeting in Sydney.

Assistant secretary of the Public Service Association, Shane O’Brien, said staff would apply for a day’s leave and, if it was not given, they would strike and lose a day’s pay.

In a media release, the PSA said the bus trip was ‘‘a last ditch attempt’’ to get answers from the minister.

Mr O’Brien said, if today's action did not succeed, they would continue to pursue Ms Hodgkinson until she agreed to a meeting.

‘‘I believe that if she had confidence in this decision she would have no problem facing up to the staff,’’ he said.

The minister still hasn't responded to our staff submission which she received in September last year! and she has never met with staff about the closure. Not to mention that she continues to base her statements about the sites condition on the supposed fact that she visited the site, however no staff ever spoke to her or saw her...

Her statements about the site having limited access, restricted expansion potential and old facilites are all untrue, and were refuted in the staff submission is she ever bothered to read it!

What will it take for the Minister to listen to common sense and reverse the decision to close the Cronulla Fisheries Centre. Numerous staff have tried to contact her to arrange for a meeting to discuss the reasons for the closure and no one has received a response. The relocation is a waste of millions of dollars of tax payers money.

Good on the staff for standing up to what they know to be a bad decision. If the decision was based on a good analysis of the best way to achieve the Government's objectives then so be it - but the truth it isn't! There is no rational support for the decision to close Cronulla Fisheries, which should be overturned.

This is a Minister and Government that does not want to CONSULT, does not want to listen to REASON and is being ILL-ADVISED. Cronulla has potential for expansion, has state of the art facilities, is a world re-known centre and is not for pete's sake "inaccessible". As a "southern sydney" resident who grew up in and around cronulla and shire I am OFFENDED by such statements! Isn't the Minister embarrassed to defend her decision on such flimsy reasons? What a joke!!

No more of your hodge-podge plans Katrina - its time you faced the music and met with these intelligent people and listen to what they have to say.......you might just learn something!

A good Country MP should be spending Fridays' in their electorate instead of holding meetings in the City.

What is being done to the staff at Cronulla by its own government is unbelievable! How can this Minister say she is there to help with any concerns we have when she has been so conveniently missing for five months!! How can she be so critical of the Sutherland Mayor for not appearing when the Minister herself is the culprit of such disastrous action based on totally ill-informed details! The Minister needs to lead by example, show herself to her people whose lives she is turning upside down, listen and show some respect towards them. If the Minister wants respect.....respect has to be earned!

What is the Minister hiding from? If she was confident that she has made the right decision surely she would meet with the staff?
