Cronulla fisheries staff rally outside parliament

23 Feb, 2012 01:13 PM
More than 100 staff and supporters demanded at another rally today that the state government ‘‘tell the truth’’ about why it was closing the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre.

‘‘Something’s fishy,’’ was a frequent cry at a rally outside State Parliament, which heard from speakers representing fisheries staff, Sutherland Shire Council, the Opposition, Greens and union movement.

Research scientist Kevin Rowlings said the decision, which was made without planning, analysis or consultation, couldn’t be about decentralisation if 40 of the staff were being relocated to other parts of Sydney and Wollongong.

Greens MP Cate Faehrmann said there was growing evidence the decision was based on political ideology and an attack on fishing science.

‘‘Your research helps determine [fish] size limits and bag limits, which [Premier] Barry O’Farrell doesn’t want you to be doing so efficiently,’’ she said.

Ms Faehrmann said she had heard that before the election, National Party Leader Andrew Stoner had told a public forum at Laurieton, near Port Macquarie, that the people present knew more about fisheries management and fishing than those at the Cronulla centre.

Professional fishermen had also been going around saying Cronulla was to be ‘‘smashed’’, she said.

Opposition Leader John Robertson, Sutherland Shire councillor Phil Blight and Public Service Association assistant secretary Shane O’Brien encouraged staff to fight on and promised continued support.

The closure decision is what happens when you put fisheries in with the agriculture department, who are used to managing resources confined to a paddock. The aggies don’t understand fisheries, ie how a public resource (fish) in the states waters has to be managed.

So, not understanding this, they do not understand the work done at the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre and what an efficient “headquarters” it is for NSW Fisheries

So we end up with this decision because the minister is taking advice only from senior agriculture bureaucrats, and refusing to even meet with fisheries staff.

Do the Nationals think the waters contain unlimited fish??? Do they believe we can allow people to take as much as they like without any problems? If the waters have unlimited fish then I must be a bloody bad fisherman!! Leave the scientists alone and let them do their job Minister. There are a million rec fishers in this State that also want to be able to catch fish too you know!!

When is Premier O'Farrell going to step in and fix this mess, clearly the minister has lost control of the situation and never really knew what she was doing in the first place. There was no planning for this decision, no costings and no risk analyses. Barry should look at all the collective evidence that says this is a poor decsion for NSW and reverse it before the damage is irreparable

Someone got a bee in their bonnett about the Fisheries Research Centre and decided it should close. Its probably just one single person holding this situation in place...too stubborn to let it go or he/she will loose face.

Seems it doesn't matter which political party you back these days .......at state or federal level they're all stuffed!

Sack 'em all and get someone who is prepared to look at the facts and make an ethical and just decision for the good of all instead of looking after their own selfish agendas.
