A VEHICLE found packed with drugs, ammunition and guns at Penshurst could provide police with answers following a series of gun crime across Sydney recently.
Police suspect the 13 firearms and almost three kilos of ecstasy they seized from a vehicle in Cambridge Street is linked to organised crime.
Middle Eastern crime squad detectives targeted and stopped the vehicle about 4pm on Tuesday but would not say how many people or who was inside.
The haul included nine rifles, an automatic assault rifle, a machine pistol, a .38-calibre Walther semi-automatic and a home-made single pistol with two barrels along with a large amount of ammunition.Police also seized 2.7 kilograms of ecstasy pills with an estimated value of half a million dollars.
The police squad responsible for seizing the haul is also investigating the shooting of a Rockdale tanning salon on Australia Day.
Detectives attached to the squad are also investigating the drive-by shooting of a Fairview Street house in Arncliffe in January and the shooting of a car at Rockdale in December.
‘‘Each of the weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to any crimes,’’ police said in a statement yesterday.
‘‘Inquiries to date by detectives suggest the weapons had previously been in the possession of organised crime groups.’’
Police yesterday were tight-lipped about the haul, refusing to comment as to whether they were speaking to possible suspects or if they expected to lay any charges.
No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
The find comes after nine shootings in the St George area in the past six months.
