HUNDREDS of unwanted books usually discarded or donated by Kogarah libraries have been put to use in a new chapter.
At least 2000 books will be screwed and glued together by the end of the week to form a sculpture in the Kogarah Library foyer as part of the National Year of Reading.
Interior designer and project manager Larissa Perazzo has been working on a reading area upholstered entirely by books, while others will be suspended from the ceiling or be transformed into works of art.
"We want to draw attention to the books themselves," she said. "There are a lot of things happening."
Library staff said the Kogarah, Oatley and South Hurstville branches together added about 17,000 books to the collections each year.
Books not wanted by the libraries are either recycled or donated to community groups.
Kogarah library's National Year of Reading will be launched on Tuesday, February 14.
