Donation helps vision-impaired gain mobility skills

05 Feb, 2012 02:00 PM
ST GEORGE RSL clubs have joined forces to support people with vision impairments with a donation of more than $88,000 to Vision Australia.

The Riverwood Legion Club donated $7644 towards Vision Australia's orientation and mobility service while Earlwood-Bardwell Park RSL Club at Bardwell Park donated $2000 and Ramsgate RSL Club donated $1000.

Vision Australia Deb Renshaw-Jones submissions manager said orientation was the ability to make a mental, three-dimensional map of where a person is and where they want to go.

Mobility is the act of actually getting there.

People who are blind or have low vision must develop and learn to apply new orientation and mobility skills such as walking with a sighted guide, using a cane or dog.

"This funding enables them to build their confidence and increase their ability to live and care for themselves independently," Ms Renshaw-Jones said.
