Erica thrilled to represent her country

HURSTVILLE year 11 student Erica Peter will be among a team of 15 athletes representing Australia for the first time at the World Dwarf Games in Belfast, Northern Ireland in July.

The games are held by the Dwarf Athletics Association and includes athletics, swimming, table tennis, football and basketball.

The 5th World Dwarf Games are sanctioned by the International Paralympics Council and will be attended by teams from Ireland, the US, Canada, England and China.

Erica, 16, a student at Bethany College, is one of only two swimmers representing Australia at the games.

Erica said she had always wanted to compete in the Paralympics. She has been swimming since she was about four years old.

"My family encouraged me to try out for the World Dwarf Games,'' Erica said.

"I've been doing swimming training for years so I just jumped at the opportunity.

"When the organisers said I could go I was shocked. I didn't think I would get in.

"It probably is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent your country.''

The organising committee, Short Statured People of Australia (SSPA), is holding a gala dinner in Melbourne on July 4, where the team will be presented with their uniforms.

As well training four days a week, Erica and fellow swimmer Sammi Lilly of Melbourne have been busy fundraising for the SSPA for the trip to Ireland.

Erica raised $5300, with the major sponsor being Canterbury Leagues Club.

Erica's grandmother, Susan Mossie, is one of her biggest supporters and takes her to training several times a week.

"Her friends at school held a cake stall which was a wonderful surprise,'' Mrs Mossie said. "I think it is a wonderful opportunity for her. We are very proud.''
