Estate agent discovers $1m cannabis crop

14/08/2008 1:00:00 AM
POLICE discovered cannabis worth almost $1 million in Beverley Hills thanks to an alert real estate agent.

Hurstville police crime manager, Detective Inspector Terry O'Neill, said the agent had gone to a house in King Georges Road at 5.30pm last Thursday because of a problem with the rent.

``Upon inspection, the real estate agents found a hydroponic set-up on the premises and police were contacted,'' Inspector O'Neill said.

A guard was set up around the house while police got a warrant to search inside. Hurstville detectives, crime scene officers and Energy Australia went to the house.

``After the power supply was deemed safe, police executed the crime scene warrant,'' Inspector O'Neill said.

Officers seized 490 cannabis plants, 290 grams of cannabis leaf and a large amount of equipment used for growing the plants. Police did not find anyone in the building.

Police are investigating if the house is linked to any other properties that have been raided recently. The drugs were estimated to have a value of $985,000.

``Police encourage residents and business people to report any suspicious activities they may see or know of, this maybe in the form of houses, people or vehicles,'' Detective Inspector O'Neill said. ``Police will assess the information and act accordingly if required.''

Investigations are continuing. Anyone with information should call Hurstville police on 93758599.
