 F6 push gains momentum

F6 push gains momentum

02 Jul, 2009 03:15 PM
THE drive to extend the F6 motorway moved up a gear this week with the first meeting of a task force comprising political, motoring, business, council, tourism and university interests.

Heavily dominated by Illawarra region representatives, the group agreed on objectives and the need to compile information for a detailed proposal to be put to the State and Federal governments.

About a dozen people attended the meeting at the headquarters of NRMA Motoring Services, which is spearheading the campaign.

NRMA director Michael Tynan, who chaired the meeting, said that until now advocates of the motorway extension had been "playing around a bit''.

"We have been asking [the Government], we have been requesting, but now we are getting a lot more serious,'' he said.

"I have been authorised by the board of the NRMA to take it on as a project, so it's all go, go, go.''

Sutherland Shire representatives included Mr Tynan, who is also a prominent motor dealer, Cook MP Scott Morrison and Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr.

Others at the meeting included the state manager of the Australian Trucking Association, Jill Lewis; chief executive of Port Kembla Corporation, Dom Figliomeni; national manager (transport) of the Tourism and Transport Forum, Kary Peterson; president of the Illawarra Business Chamber, Les Dion, and executive director of Infrastructure Partnerships Australia, Brendon Lyon.

Also present were the director, corporate relations, at the University of Wollongong, Craig Peden; Kiama MP Matt Brown; assistant Deputy Mayor of Shoalhaven City Council, Andrew Guile, and Princes Highway Taskforce member Patricia Knight.

Officials of the NSW Business Chamber and the State MP for Shellharbour, Lylea McMahon, accepted, but were unable to attend.

Mr Morrison said that while the proposal might be strongly supported by groups south of Sydney, it was also very much in the shire's interests.

"It will be the shire that suffers as a result of the increasingly heavy traffic coming out of Port Kembla,'' he said.

"But it also has a broader economic value because it is the missing link in the Sydney-Illawarra economic zone.

"To have the support of the Illawarra is very important because it is strategically important to that region's economic future.''

Mr Morrison said he was certain the proposal enjoyed "broad and deep support'' from shire residents, particularly if it included a tunnel for traffic beneath Kirrawee and Gymea.

"The task force is all about building momentum and support for getting into action territory on the F6,'' he said.

"It is about getting information out to our communities and engaging them in a consultative process very early in the process.''

Do you support the NRMA's push for the extension of the F6 motorway?

At a time when we are at peak oil, where Climate Change is on us, it is disgusting that proponents of roads [and sellers of cars] want to divide the Shire into 2 by a road that leads nowhere. The Govt has spent considerable money duplicating the Cronulla line. Use public transport to town.

Millions of dollars to be spent to create more trafic jam at LOFTUS and KOGARAH!!??? Dividing the shire one more time and creating more noise, polution resulting in loss of lifestyle and health. This time, they will be stabing with a knife the Heart of The SHIRE and his people.

Why does Michael Tynan continue to push this barrow. He has made himself the self pro claimed expert on road transport in the area why? Barry Collier won the last election thanks mainly to this issue, why doesn't Mr Tynan understand the car is not the way of future nor are more freewaysThis will be expensive white elephant.

Anyone who needs to use the roads to earn a living realises that something has to give. If we can't have a complete bypass, then this is at least a step in the right direction. Although I love 'The Shire' our road system is abysmal & travelling is a nightmare.

If we must spend big dollars on improving the North/South flow of traffic through the 'Shire, surely a better option is to look at upgrading & repairing the existing Princes Hwy, and the rail line, rather than cutting big sections out of relatively quiet domestic areas and a section of the Royal NP for a 2nd noisy, smokey roadway?! The CBD can only hold so many cars.

No, the residents of the Illawarra do not want the F6 extension. Nor do we want Dom Figliomini, Lylea McMahon, Matt Brown, Noreen Hay or Michael Tynan to pretend that they care. We want improved PUBLIC TRANSPORT. We want a rail system that is good for industry and commuters.

It has been no secret that Mr Tynan has been pushing the F6 agenda for some time. Well excuse me if I seem a little cynical.

When will Shire resident wake up to the fact that the "shire "is not their private fiefdom, but part of the whole of Sydney, NSW and Australia? The F6 will save countless hours of travel time each year and remove the danger and local congestion that heavy traffic causes to communities in southern Sydney. Wake up - it's 2009 and the world is different!

The F6 should be built as soon as possible to reduce traffic congestion in St George and the Shire. It would provide an alternative to stop start traffic congestion on the Princes Hwy and other major roads such as Grand Parade, Rocky Point Rd, Taren Point Rd, President Rd (both) and the Kingsway. It needs to provide direct access to Sydney Airport, Port Botany, major industrial and commercial areas at Mascot and Taren Point as well as the M5 Motorway and Southern Cross Drive / Eastern Distributor. It also needs to provide a bypass for Heathcote and Engadine. This would provide benefits to all who live in the Shire and St George by reducing congestion in our suburbs especially with increasing traffic from the Illawarra region. It would also reduce pollution caused by motor vehicles caught in stop start traffic. And remember, not everybody lives and/or works near a train line

Please, please, please get the F6 happening. It is long overdue, and is needed to take traffic away from major congestion points like Brighton, Taren Point Road and the Princes Highway at Kirrawee. It will eventually be built and will be driven over and enjoyed by everyone who uses it, including the noisy minority who currently object to it. These luddites oppose any sort of improvement to the Shire's Traffic Infrastructure like the Woronora Bridge and Miranda Five Ways Intersection but are happy to use them once they are built. Long live progress its better than slipping backwards. BUILD THE F6 !
