Fisherman drowns for fallen rod

25 Nov, 2008 12:00 AM
A MAN, 38, drowned after jumping into the sea to retrieve his fallen fishing rod at Point Solander on Friday.

Police said the man, from Newington, whose name has not been released, had been with a friend at 3pm when he jumped into the water.

He was wearing jeans and heavy boots which may have dragged him under.

A police helicopter crew spotted his body some time later near rocks and Botany Bay water police collected it at about 3.30pm.

Police said the man's friend had been taken to Miranda station where Korean interpreters were assisting investigating officers.
