GRAYS Point Public School has won a top state achievement award from the Department of Education and Training.
It is one of only 40 schools across NSW to win a director-general's award.
Several initiatives by the school got them noticed, including a brother-sister mentoring program, a transition to high school program, and a parent seminar on positive psychology.
The brother-sister program pairs kindergarten children with year 6 pupils to give them support when making the transition to primary school.
"Every year 6 person has a kindy buddy, and they can help look after them if they are sad,'' year 6 pupil Eliza Parker said. Kindergarten student Thomas Duff said having an older buddy made going to primary school more fun.
"We are excited to have someone bigger looking after us,'' he said.
