A WOMAN whose son died in a car accident last year will be guest speaker at an evening to educate young men about safe driving.
Gymea Junior Rugby League Football Club will hold a pizza night on July 9 in honour of their former player, Kristopher Hamilton, who was killed in a smash late last year.
Kristopher's mother, Linda Hamilton, will be one of the guest speakers, which will be attended by the club's two under-17s teams.
Kristopher, 15, of Gymea, was a passenger in a car driven by a P-plate driver which crashed on President Avenue, Miranda, on October 18 last year.
Mrs Hamilton said she still expected Kristopher, known as "Hamo'', to walk through the front door each day, and longed to receive one of his reverse-charge phone calls.
She said the recent court case involving the driver of the car that crashed and killed 17-year-old Kim O'Brien at Bundeena two years ago had brought back memories of the night police arrived at her home to tell her Kristopher was dead.
Mrs Hamilton said she hoped the pizza evening would result in young drivers thinking twice before they got behind the wheel of a car or accepted a lift with a friend.
"No parent should ever have to visit a morgue, nor should a parent ever have to bury a child or receive a knock at the door by the police to say their child is dead,'' she said.
"I plead to all young drivers or any driver to think about what they are doing before they get behind a wheel.''
The evening will also serve as a fund-raiser through the sales of T-shirts printed with the words: "R.I.P. Hamo 03/11/92-18/10/08''.
One hundred T-shirts have so far been made to raise awareness of the need for safe driving.
The shirts sell for $20, and $2 from each sale is donated to the anti-violence movement, Enough is Enough, for its Road Trauma Support Group.
The football club, the Gymea Gorillas, has ordered 50 shirts, which it will hand out to players on the night.
Kristopher played for the club's under 15s in 2007, and his younger brother, Nicolaus, plays with the under 12s.
Mrs Hamilton said she did not know how she would have coped without the support offered by Enough is Enough, which arranged grief counselling for herself and her husband Andrew.
"I truly praise the work the organisation does in the community with all areas of therapy and education.
"This project will help reach out to youth and make them think, every time they see a shirt; and maybe it will remind them how their mate died.''
