YOUTH problems centering on under-age drinking and graffiti were among the hot topics in Sutherland Shire during the recent Lions' Youth of the Year Quest event.
Every year, the group gives those aged from 16 to 19 a chance to share their views through a public speaking forum on issues facing teenagers within their communities.
The representatives this time included a panel from Menai police station, National Australia Bank and NSW Board of Education.
Joanna Icke, the captain of Inaburra School, represented the young people of Menai.
"The event is a great way to enhance public speaking skills and it's also a good opportunity for members of the panel to speak with us about the best ways to communicate with young Australians,'' Joanna said.
"There has been a lot of talk about raising the legal age for consumption of alcohol recently, so it was good to see that the panel members were actually interested in hearing out thoughts on whether that would solve some issues.''
The event includes a series of public speaking responses to unseen questions, panel interviews and prepared speeches.
Inaburra principal Paul Burgis said it was extremely important for young people to develop a "strong sense of community'' early on in their lives.
"Opportunities that enable students to develop their communication and leadership skills are invaluable in preparing them for life after school,'' Dr Burgis said.
