RESIDENTS are continuing to raise concerns about vandalised bus shelters, like the one pictured left at Sans Souci, and the safety problems they pose to passengers.
A spokeswoman for Adshel, which is contracted to maintain bus shelters in St George, said it spent $959,000 in Sydney region last year, which included repairing vandalism and broken glass.
She said its maintenance policy was to remove broken glass within three hours and have it replaced within 24 hours.
South Hurstville resident Leone Chilcott said she and other passengers were "shocked'' to see smashed glass strewn across the pavement when they arrived to catch a bus at Connells Point Road recently.
Ms Chilcott said she regularly picked up rubbish around the area and was disappointed at the amount of graffiti and vandalism.
"The glass was all over the footpath. They build these nice bus shelters and then they're destroyed,'' Ms Chilcott said.
Monterey resident Jean Hann said she was dismayed after walking past two bus shelters on The Grand Parade, one in Monterey and another in Brighton-Le-Sands, which were smashed on the weekend.
Another bus shelter, at Frederick Street, Rockdale, was also vandalised last week.
Ms Hann said people should have a stronger sense of "civic pride''.
"It makes such a mess,'' she said.
"Some people accept it as a changing society, but you should not have to be afraid of going to a bus stop because of vandalism.''
