Human feathers fly at dog and cat home

Human feathers fly at dog and cat home

16 Jan, 2008 08:19 AM
A DISPUTE has broken out at the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home at Carlton between volunteers and management over the organisation's future direction.

Manager Pat Hood has resigned after more than eight years there.

The Leader has received other reports that some of the volunteer carers have left, allegedly upset at decisions by the management committee taking the home in a new direction.

The new leadership released a statement on the home's website outlining changes including the role of the centre's volunteer co-ordinator who will now be under control of the new management committee.

The home's newly appointed chief executive officer, Frank De Silva, said that, unfortunately, the board determined that the services of the volunteer co-ordinator and her deputy were no long required.

"We didn't want her [Pat Hood]to go but she said she was unhappy to stay under the new regime," Mr De Silva said.

"There has been a disagreement between Ms Hood and the committee of management on the appropriate way to go forward.

Ms Hood finished up at the home last Friday.

"I agree that all businesses need to go forward but it is just how you go forward," she said.

"We are the most successful animal re-homing centre in NSW.

"There are things we don't think need changing but we wish them well."

Mr De Silva said the home would maintain its prime aim and objective of compassionate care and its low kill rate.

"We will still keep the volunteer system in place but felt the volunteer coordinator should be taken into management structure," he said.

The centre has 12 staff, either full or part-time, and 40 active volunteers.

Mr De Silva said his committee of management reviewed the financial situation of the organisation and had concerns about its viability.

I think what is happening at SDCH is appalling and I am very concerned for the future of animals who will now be brought to the shelter. I have made many donations to the Golden Oldies but what will happen to them now? Will they just be euthanased because it is the easy and cheap option? I hope someone is watching to see how the kill rate changes. I will no longer donate money but will supply treats, rice, tuna etc.

Disappointed Donator

Even though sweeping changes are needed all over NSW to better manage the domestic dog and cat ownership issue, the changes in progress at Sydney Dogs Home are not the way to go about it.

Concentrating on the source of why so many dogs and cats are in Pounds all over NSW is the issue to focus on............ If there were stricter laws for pet ownership, infrastructures such as the Sydney Dogs Home would be naturally wound down, therefore costs would reduce and volunteers could be better deployed elsewhere.

A new broom coming in and dismantling a sound working relationship between Management, paid staff and volunteers is not what the Pound Dogs and Cats need in their short lives right now.

Congratulations on your article about the strife at Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. There were a couple of serious ommissions however .... the fact that SEVEN staff have resigned in protest at the actions of the new management committee. The new Management have decided the Shelter is to be run as a 'business' although they still want people to donate as if they are a charity. God help the animals in all this!

This is only part of the story! Volunteers are furious that for no good reason their long-serving co-ordinator has had to leave the Shelter. Seven staff have given their notice or just walked out. The new CEO seems to think there are only 40 active volunteers when there are 350! This Shelter had the highest rehoming rate in NSW because of the dedication of the staff and volunteers now gone from there. I doubt if Mr Da Silva will be able to do as good a job as they have done.

I am at a loss to understand how Mr De Silva arrived at the SDCH in mid November as an administrator and within a few weeks was elected CEO. I am very sad to hear Pat Hood has resigned. Her integrity, compassion and decication for animal welfare was second to none. I have great concern for all the animals under this new management.

Your article implies the volunteer co-ordinator and her deputy were just told their services were no longer required. WHAT IS GOING ON AT THE SHELTER? I suggest the Leader contact the Pound Manager now

I am very saddend and concerned by the recent events taking place at the SDCH.

From experience I know that the previous Management - Pat Hood and Tracey Etchells, as well as the members of their staff who have now resigned, were totally committed and dedicated to the welfare of the animals in their care. The same goes of course for Christine Davis, the Ex Volunteer Co-ordinator who for many years has given tirelessly of her time to improve the lives of the animals in the shelter, and all this on a voluntary basis. As a volunteer at the shelter, I have always admired the work those people and the many other volunteers have been doing. Their incredible efforts to re-home the animals and give them a second well-deserved chance at a happy live after the came into the shelter - abandoned and often in a terrible state after being neglected and mistreated.

I find it hard to believe that, if the shelter is in future to be run as a business, that the welfare of the animals will still be the number one priority. What about the older animals or the large ones or the ones that aren't quite so cute to look at? Will they get the time to find a new home, or will the just be put down when their legally required holding time expires? After all, businesses are usually run for profits and not to serve love and compassion.

This is a very disappointing time for S.D.&C.H. My concern now is for the rehoming of animals. It will be interesting to see if the new management can match the rehoming rate of the previous management. Running an animal shelter is more than pulling in donations.

I am disgusted at the recent events at Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. The volunteer co-ordinator who had been at the home, as a volunteer for six and a half years, over 4 and half years as the volunteer co- ordinator, and despite giving freely of her time was BANNED from ever returning because she dared to tell the volunteers the truth

No one has any idea as to what the real plans are for the shelter, or for the animals that come into their care.

Perhaps the dogs and cats would be more adept at running this once wonderful place. Boo to the new regime!

Pat, Christine, all the staff and volunteers were wonderful and I speak from personal experience as a volunteer when I had the time. I loved getting my "furry friend fix" and really enjoyed the friendly and caring environment when the volunteers were there helping the most important asset of the place - the dogs and cats! No committee or administrator can run this place as a business, because it is not a business it is a human and animal co-operative with one aim to help four legged friends to get back on their paws and hopefuly find a good permanent home after a temporary stay

at SDCH!
