THE Kirrawee Gang Show is a Sutherland Shire institution, and this year is its 50th anniversary.
The show, written and performed by local Scouts, is the oldest gang show in the state and the third-oldest in
Australia.
It has provided the chance for thousands of Scouts and Guides from the south metropolitan region and beyond to show their theatrical talents.
Sketch director Paul Morrison, who began performing in the show in 1993 and now writes the sketches, said the show started in 1959 with a two-night debut at Sutherland School of Arts.
The first cast came from the first and second Sutherland Scout troops.
The program consisted of big musical ensembles and sketches in a concept stemming from creator Gordon Davison's time in England with the South West London Gang Show.
"[It] was such a success that it was decided there must be another Kirrawee Gang Show,'' Mr Morrison said. ``In fact, there was to be another 50 years' worth.''
Since that first season, the Kirrawee Gang Show has grown to include Scouts and Guides mainly from the south metropolitan region.
"We've staged the show at many venues, including the Gymea School Auditorium, Port Hacking High School, the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, and now the Hurstville Entertainment Centre, which we've called home since 1999,'' Mr Morrison said.
Rehearsals for the 50th anniversary season are well under way, and things are looking set for another great event.
In 2009 there is a cast of nearly 80 people and another 50 behind the scenes, with cast members and crew ranging from 10 to 45 years old.
Kirrawee Gang Show opens on June 30 and runs until July 4 at Hurstville Entertainment Centre.
