It's the year of the rat pack

24 Jan, 2008 02:01 PM
SUTHERLAND Shire Council is bringing all the glitz and glamour of the Rat Pack era to Cronulla on Australia Day with Swing! Live on the Sands.

Hear Peter Cousens, Dale Burridge, David Melak and leading lady Danielle Everett pay tribute to the sophisticated 1950s cabaret era.

Accompanied by a bevy of Viva Cronulla Showgirls, they will revive the smooth sounds of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis jnr, with their famous wisecracking attitude and sensational dance routines.

Dressed in dapper dinner suits and an array of slinky gowns, they will bring timeless tunes to life with the help of the John Morrison swing band and take you on an energetic trip down memory lane.

The show begins at 7.45pm and runs until the fireworks extravaganza at 9.30pm live on the stage in Cronulla Park on Australia Day.

There are plenty of other activities to keep you and the family busy on the day including:

Jock Athletic Jane McGrath Classic Fun Run/Walk Test your pace and endurance on this fun but challenging obstacle course around Cronulla Park and beach. Or join walkers of all ages on a 3 kilometre esplanade walk to Shelly Beach and back. www.jockathletic.com.

Family Fun Hit the beach from 7am for a morning of fun family activities, including woodchopping exhibitions, mechanical bull rides, gumboot bocce and cooking demonstrations.

Mass All welcome to attend mass at St Aloysius Catholic Church, Cronulla, at 9am.

Historical Display Catch the Sutherland Shire Historical Society displays at the Cronulla Community Hall, Surf Road in Cronulla, from 9am to 4pm. The two displays highlight the Centenary of Surf Lifesaving in Cronulla and Our Place.

On Stage Entertainment From 10am enjoy a variety of dance and musical groups including Active Kidz, Miranda Musical Society Show Stoppers, Ever Inside, the Endeavour Harmony Chorus and a selection of dynamic dance troupes.

Fireworks If you're in the area, you mustn't miss the beachside fireworks extravaganza, which begins at 9.30pm.

I live in Cronulla and have just come from shopping in the mall. It was so peaceful walking down there listening to a man playing “Waltzing Matilda” on his keyboard and everyone was smiling. There were loads of people in shops buying Australia Day T shirts, flags etc. Then I walked home past the new stage and there were children dancing on the stage – it was a great feeling to be living in such a friendly and buzzing place as Cronulla.
