Just the fox - is gym slogan offensive?

12 Jan, 2010 01:55 PM
A women's health club advertising billboard straddling the Princes Highway at Kirrawee has offended some residents.

Gymea Baptist Church is on one side of the walkway and Gymea Technology High School is on the other.

The sign reading "Join for fox sake'' promotes Fernwood Women's Health Clubs, but a resident who wanted to remain anonymous said she was disgusted at the implication of the word ``fox''.

Fernwood's national marketing and services manager Joanne Bradley said the billboard was part of a series with a theme using the word "fox''.

"It's about women finding the inner you, about inner confidence, it's about women being foxy, not being sexy.''

The previous advertisements read: "Find your inner fox'' and "Be a fox without botox''.

Sutherland Shire councillor, Reverend George Capsis, said the sign was inappropriate and he intended contacting the council about having it removed.

"I'm unoffended personally but I'm surprised that Fernwood couldn't have come up with something better than that; I thought that they had more class,'' Cr Capsis said.

Senior minister at Gymea Baptist Church, Reverend Karl Faase, said he thought there were better and more creative ways of doing business than using such slogans.

*At Rockdale Plaza a banner on a stand today has the slogan ''Join for fox sake.''

Of course it is offensive. The marketers were trying so see how far they could go in promoting the continual decline in social standards. To suggest that the implication in the current message is not about being sexy may be right...it is about sex. Sorry Fernwood, your marketers were too smart by half. It was also bad siting to have the ad placed between a school and a church - not that there was any good place to put this ad other than the lining of a sewer.

I suppose it is a little like the logo hanging off Beverly Hills public school crossover bridge that use to say, "Real men don't bash their wives." Maybe they should put this one up there, "Real women don't abort their children." I think most of the time the Churches message is only understood by those who apply the Christian world view. Perhaps they haven't noticed that their neighbor understand things through the postmodern lens of relativity. Noah warned everyone in his day about rain; the problem was it had never rained before Noah's time which meant his message was largely mis-understood as it is today. What about Fox trucks?

I think it's funny! It's just a play on words, what is with this breed of over-sensitive people these days? But I'm sure the minority will win once again, the sign will be removed, and then they will start looking for the next piece of advertising/tv show/anything that could be deemed even mildly offensive to complain it. Sigh.

I find the Fernwood ad offensive and it should be removed. This is not what we want displayed in our streets.

As for the comments for the word that is suggested not being acceptable 'language' I suggest you point your argument at an institution that administers the English language somewhat. The word that is suggested is in the oxford dictionary. As for Joan and Silver, I put it to you that you have said 'sugar' in your time. That's suggestive too.

Another example of extreme touchy-feely "politial correctness" in an ever growing age of censorship by religeous factions. Well done for proving yet again that people can no longer share an open mind and imagination when advertising, inevitably to be brought back to the stone ages by would be concious do-gooders who have little to no sense of freedom of speech. Wake up to yourselves and leave your condemning ideals at your respective Parish doors and get on with living your lives without judgement and predjudices on other peoples talents and ways of expression and advertising. Well done Fernwood, you allow people the enjoyment of feeling good and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in a secure and non intimidating environment and you should be entitled to advertise however you deem appropriate, as you do nothing more than positive steps rather than harm to peoples lives.

Wow, i put my real name rather than anonymous because i have the guts to stick up for what i believe in unlike this whining person who found this offensive. I know 40 year old adults who didn't realise the joke of this billboard so how the hell would a child get it...unless the parents introduce them to it. Yes, I am talking to you Ms Anonymous.

I'm a female in my early 20s who used to be a member of Fernwood gym, but on principle I would never join again. I think this sort of advertising is highly inappropriate. I also think it cheapens the company's image. I agree with Karl Faase - I thought Fernwood had more class than that. I think some of you have to realise that using this sort of language in personal conversations is totally different to using on public billboards. When kids learn to read they will read anything & everything out loud & will ask their parents what it means. And apart from that, some of us like to be able to choose how much swearing we are exposed to in our everyday lives. If you choose to watch movies with this sort of language in it that's your choice, but please don't expose me to it when I'm out driving or doing my shopping.

Thanks Young Person. As an older, long time member, of Fernwood, in the 50 - 60 bracket of clients, I had assumed it to be a generational thing. Apart from the slogan, which has no class, the whole notion of being a wily old fox - sly, cunning, devious - does not sit comfortably with me! Rethink the campaign Fernwood.
