Love shows in census statistics

MORE than half of all people in St George and Sutherland Shire are married, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.

On the night of the 2006 census, 54.3 per cent of Sutherland Shire residents were married and 30.6 per cent had never been married.

The percentage of people separated or divorced was 9.5 per cent and 5.6 per cent were widowed.

In Kogarah, 54.2 per cent of residents were married with only slightly more never married (30.7 per cent).

Fewer people were separated or divorced (8.9 per cent) but more people were widowed (6.2 per cent).

In Rockdale, 50.3 per cent of residents were married and 32.1 per cent had never been married. The divorce and separation figure was highest in Rockdale than anywhere else in St George or the shire (10.8 per cent) and 6.8 per cent of residents were widowed.

In Hurstville, 53.7 per cent of people were married and 30.3 per cent had never been married. Nine per cent were divorced or separated and 6.9 per cent were widowed.
