A FERRY ride to Luna Park 70 years ago led to a life-long commitment for Joyce and John Watters of Sylvania.
Mrs Watters was having a day out at Luna Park with her best friend when she met Mr Watters, who was attending with his best friend. Subsequently, both couples married.
Mr and Mrs Watters were married on January 27, 1942. They lived at Matraville and raised their three children, John, Bruce (deceased) and Joycelyn.
Mr Watters worked as a truck driver and the family made extra income by making party hats and lolly bags at home.
Mrs Watters worked in a factory, PDF Bottlers, at Botany and Mr Watters eventually got a job at Sydney Airport in cabin service for many years.
When he retired, they were given a round-the-world trip as a result of his conscientiousness and loyalty.
Mrs Watters opened and ran a shop, Smart Drapery, at Ramsgate for many years.
She also worked as a volunteer at the Sydney Children's Hospital and St George Hospital.
They have lived at Frank Vickery Village for the past eight years. Mr Watters is 91 and Mrs Watters, 87. They have 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
They marked their 70th wedding anniversary with their family and friends at a celebratory lunch at Taren Point Bowling Club on January 29.
