Man with toy gun closes street

16 Aug, 2011 03:48 PM
HURSTVILLE residents thought there was a gunman walking up and down Durham Street last week.

But the suspected gunman turned out to be an autistic man, 19, holding a plastic toy gun.

Police closed down the intersection of Durham and Lily streets about 11am after reports from a passer-by that a man was standing at the intersection armed with a hand gun.

It was said the man then ran into a nearby house.

Acting Inspector Branko Kubecka said police set up a safe perimeter and began to look for the man with the help of his parents.

Police found the man in his house and he had with a toy gun.

A second plastic gun was also found in his bedroom.

"It was just a young person playing with toy guns," acting Inspector Branko said.

"He was reunited with his family."

He told media gathered at the intersection that he did not expect any charges to be laid.
