THE mystery which surrounded the sudden clean-up of a grassy, weedy median strip at Sylvania which residents have said they have been complaining about for years has been solved.
Resident Rhonda Serow said the Princes Highway median strip near Clare Street had been overgrown with weeds and was an eyesore for six or seven years.
"I've complained numerous times both to the RTA and the (Sutherland Shire) council,'' Mrs Serow said.
Fellow resident Ed Brook moved from Blakehurst to Sylvania around a year ago, but was disappointed to find an untidy entrance to the shire for those driving past Tom Uglys Bridge from Sydney.
Although the residents were confused about what organisation should do the cleaning up the RTA or Sutherland Shire the RTA has confirmed it has that responsibility and cleaned the area a couple of weeks ago.
What action prompted the clean-up remains a mystery, however.
State MP for Miranda Barry Collier said that Mr Brook had complained about the messy median strip on August 4 and although the area was not in Mr Collier's electorate he contacted the RTA.
On August 24, Mr Brook again checked the progress of the complaint but there had been no action.
Mr Collier said that he had not received any direct communication about the RTA's intention to fix the problem, but he knew about the recent clean-up.
The mystery is the timing of the clean-up, which happened only days after Mrs Serow and Mr Brook told the Leader about their concerns.
An RTA spokesman thanked the community for concern about the median strip near the overpass to Sylvania Public School.
"The RTA has listened to the community and sent a clean-up team to the median strip,'' the spokesman said.
"The RTA team removed the rubbish, whipper-snipped the grass and weeded the area.
"The RTA will continue to maintain the area.''
The RTA spokesman said that the median strip will be enhanced with new plants.
