Minister says no to saving Fisheries jobs

22 Feb, 2012 03:35 PM
SUTHERLAND Shire mayor Carol Provan and two other councillors failed today to persuade Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson not to close Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre.

‘‘We went through every point we have made since the decision was announced and she just said she was not changing her mind,’’ Cr Provan said.

‘‘We came away just so frustrated.’’

She and fellow AWard councillors Kevin Schreiber and George Capsis did receive an assurance the government would not sell the Gunnamatta Bay site.

It would make a small amount of sense to close Cronulla Fisheries if th Govt WAS going to sell the land. Aren't we in need of $$$?

This Minister has something against Cronulla otherwise, why would you close a World class facility only to try and replicate it in 13 new places? and lose experienced and highly trained staff in the process? while destroying families as staff are left jobless in these tough times or making staff move away from their families and support networks?

I am sooooo confused!

Thanks for trying Mayor. It's a bit diificult to use logic and reason with an idiot - especially one who is being advised by a vindictive old Director general whose sole pleasure appears to be closing down a world class fisheries facility. Where's O'Farrell to fix this mess?

This is what happens when you put fisheries in with the agriculture department. The aggies don’t understand fisheries.

And they don’t understand that fisheries staff Cronulla are near a major transport hub, and are equally accessible to ALL NSW, regional and metropolitan alike. So they think it is a good idea to put fisheries in a regional area. Now fisheries will only be easily accessible to one region, the rest will miss out.

So this decision is because the minister is only taking advice from senior agriculture division bureaucrats, and refusing to even meet with fisheries staff.

This state government says 'yes' to closing the Cronulla Fisheries, but says 'no' to extending the vital F6 Freeway.

Reason & logic thrown out the window!

Barry, dont act like a "stunned Mullet" when you lose Cronulla at the next election, just blame it on Katrina.

Actually, Willycat, its more than that for Barry to worry about, it’s the surrounding marginal electorates like Heathcote, Barry should worry about.

Remember, these are less than 150 people who could get near 20,000 signatures on a petition in just a few weeks.

Think what they could gather in votes to the anti closure (anti-coalition) party of their choice!

Oh, and why upset a lot of them, then send them to 2 marginal liberal electorates? A play by the nationals against the liberals?
