AFTER 12 years of red tape, Sutherland Shire Council finally looks set to approve a skate park near Wanda Beach.
The park is expected to be given the green light at next month's council meeting but it could still be several years before construction actually starts.
"It seems to be taking forever ... it's embarrassing,'' said Sutherland Shire councillor George Capsis.
"I have a quiet confidence that it will be approved, but the budget for this year is already done, so I'm afraid it will at least be next year before money is set aside,'' he said.
Apart from funding, the proposal still has to be approved by the Department of Lands because the site is within a state park.
After that, council will lodge a development application with itself, then put the proposal back out for public comment.
Councillor Dave Redmond said he supported the park and was worried the process could be used to drag out the project for years.
"These processes can be used as an excuse for very little happening over a very long period of time,'' Cr Redmond said. "If we are required to approve a DA, I can't see why we can't prepare it right now.''
Cr Redmond said when he was mayor he was told there was nothing in the skate park proposal that the State Government would object to.
"So once they lodge this proposal they need to follow it up so it doesn't sit around on some chap's desk gathering dust for six months.''
Eastern Area Skate Park Steering Committee chairman Stuart Murray said the 12-year consultation process meant "the community can't say they haven't been listened to''.
"The modern skate parks are not ugly concrete slabs anymore. They have lovely parks with designer features, trees and gardens,'' he said.
Mr Murray said skateboarding was a legitimate sport that had a huge following and would be a demonstration event at the 2012 London Olympics.
