More patrols on Cronulla Esplanade after woman injured by out of control skateboarder

14 May, 2009 02:16 PM
CRONULLA resident Claudia Droulias returned to The Esplanade on Sunday.

It was the first time she had walked along the beachfront since February, when a serious accident resulted in a permanent disability to her left arm.

"I was hit from behind with full force by a skateboarder who had run out of control due to high speed,'' she said.

"Since that day, I have not been on my usual daily walk on The Esplanade due to fear of getting hurt again.''

Ms Droulias fell to her side when she was struck and smashed her arm against the concrete.

"My elbow had to be reconstructed,'' she said. "I had a checkup last week. My arm will never stretch out 100 per cent.''

A Sutherland Shire Council spokesman said skateboard-free areas were clearly marked and staff policed the areas.

"Council officers patrol areas such as The Esplanade as extensively as possible within their resources,'' he said.

"Earlier this year, council extended patrol times along [Cronulla's] Esplanade to include early mornings and has established a bicycle unit, which has been undertaking public education and safety patrols in Cronulla's parks, reserves and other public places.''

But the council's actions were not enough for Ms Droulias.

"It's a serious problem,'' she said.

"I think the authorities are very slack.''

Have you had any close calls on The Esplanade?

Oh sure. Do these people think we all came down in the last shower. When ever anything like this happens the authorities assure us they will 'increase patrols of the area'. This is usually a blatant lie and nothing changes so why do they persist?

The council is very slack when it comes to patrolling the esplanade. I frequent this area and have only seen one patrol in three years. It is only a matter of time before someone else is injured or worse, especially small children. Whenever I am there with my child I am forever looking back over my shoulder to see if the next speeding (and they don't even slow down)cyclist/stateboarder is going past. Get these people off this area with heavy fines. (Instead of fining dog owners and by the way I don't own a dog). I had a close call with a speeding cyclist on a pavement around cronulla recently too. MESSAGE TO CYCLISTS - GET OFF THE PAVEMENT - IF ITS NOT ILLEGAL IT SHOULD BE. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RIDE ON THE ROAD, DON'T RIDE A BIKE, OR GET OFF AND WALK - YOU ARE PUTTING OTHER PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY ELDERLY AND CHILDREN AT RISK.

Negative attention brought to all skateboarders in the shire again, now we'll never have a skatepark built! No offence to this poor lady, but there are far more dangerous four wheeled machines to watch out for. I also don't see how this really puts the police at fault. This just seems like another example of media manipulation isolating another group of people from one incident. If she was hit by a car or knocked over by a dog this would never make the news. Great reporting!

I walk the Esplanade frequently & I agree with Nicky, I am sick to death of cyclists, skateboarders & dogs off leashes on the Esplanade. I have never seen a council ranger in the area ever. Why have rules & regulations if no one enforces them. Council needs to take control of the area & enforce their laws ASAP before there are more accidents.

First up, my best wishes to the Claudia for her recovery. Did the Leader contact the skater and ask for their side of the story. Sure, maybe they shouldn't have been there but what REALLY happened. This incident highlights the need for the skate park at Wanda. Councillors should stop listening to the bleating of the vocal minority who represent no one but themselves. Get the politics out of Council and stop bowing to intimidation from NIMBYs. The public wants the skate park on that wasteland called Don Lucas Reserve. Serve the community. Not the activists. Support the skate facility for everyone.

If the skate park gets put in at Wanda, skaters from all over Sydney will be getting off at trains from Cronulla and Woolooware and skating over 2 kilometres on paths and roads. We have seen nothing yet. The paths around the waterfront are not just normal footpaths but full of walkers, beach goers, surfers, tourists, old people, mothers with young kids and prams - add skates and bikes and this will be a regular occurrence.

Esplanade walker, to a point you are right. The Bate Bay management plan from years ago highlighted the need for for extra cycle/skate paths in along the beaches in Cronulla and we have seen nothing. The Council should follow the B.B. management plan, take a look at San Diego, and have dual paths to accomodate all the community. Yes, it is about 2k from the station but BusLink buses meet every train and have said they would be happy to have a bus stop at the bottom of Bate Bay Rd. Problem solved.
