More speeders are in their 30s

IN Sutherland Shire, males aged in their 30s are among the worst offenders when it comes to excessive speeding, a highway patrol officer says.

While the RTA reports male drivers aged under 25 are most likely to be caught driving at excessive speeds, Senior Sergeant Michael Simpson said highway patrol officers in this area were catching more men in their 30s.

Senior Sergeant Simpson said the high number of motorists caught speeding was worrying, as was the rise in the number detected travelling at high speeds.

He said one driver was caught last month at more than double the speed limit.

Police clocked the vehicle at 184kmh in a 90kmh zone as it sped along the Princes Highway at Yarrawarrah.

The same month, a 31-year-old Dolans Bay man caught travelling at 137kmh in an 80 kmh zone on the Princes Highway at Waterfall.

Senior Sergeant Simpson said public education was a key component of an ongoing police operation that targets speeding and drink-driving.

Operation Roadsafe Otter is backed by the RTA and Sutherland Shire Council and uses mobile electronic signboards and bridge banners to warn motorists of the dangers of speeding and drink-driving.

As part of the operation, police are rostered on to patrol known crash hotspots such as the Princes Highway and Royal National Park.

Senior Sergeant Simpson said such high-profile operations allowed police to concentrate their efforts to reinforce the message that ``if you speed or drink and drive the chances of being caught are high''.
