Murder charge Comanchero boss arrested

02 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
COMANCHERO motorcycle club president Mick Hawi is back behind bars after being arrested at his Bexley home on Tuesday and charged with murder.

Hawi, 29, was one of a number of Comanchero and Hells Angels bikies involved in a brawl at Sydney Airport on March 22.

The brother of one of the Hells Angels, Anthony Zervas, 29, was severely injured during the fight and died later at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Hawi, along with a number of other participants, had previously been charged with affray in relation to the incident but a successful Supreme Court appeal from his lawyers earned him strict conditional bail in May.

He had been in solitary confinement in a 4mx2m cell for more than a month after handing himself in to police on April 6.

Justice Megan Latham imposed strict bail conditions including a $200,000 bond.

Hawi was confined to his Connemara Street home from 8pm to 8am and was allowed to leave the house only in daylight and he had to be in the company of his wife, father or cousin.

Justice Latham said Hawi had strong community ties including his pregnant wife and son and the two businesses he owned.

Hawi's lawyers argued during his original bail application in Central Local Court and during the appeal that his wife needed assistance.

At Kogarah Local Court on Tuesday defence lawyer Leslie Randall said Hawi's wife was due to give birth within the next two weeks.

Hawi appeared briefly in the court on Tuesday afternoon but did not apply for bail which was formally refused.

After the hearing Mr Zervas's mother and relatives confronted Hawi's supporters outside.

A scuffle broke out and they pushed, swore and spat at each other.

Hawi will appear in Central Local Court on July 9.
