New Salvos leaders ready to help

05 Feb, 2012 11:00 AM
NEIL and Sharon Clanfield have been appointed as leaders of the Salvation Army's operations at Miranda.

They are replacing Anthony and Janice Rees.

Both Salvation Army majors, Mr and Mrs Clanfield have both worked full-time with the Salvation Army for more than 25 years.

During this time they have been appointed to different congregations in NSW and Queensland and in Halifax, Canada, where they were based for four years.

For the past five years they have been based at the territorial headquarters in the city.

In their new role they will be responsible for the work of the Salvation Army including leading the church and working with volunteers to meet the needs of the community.

This includes running the Salvation Army's free legal aid service, counselling and community welfare.

Their work will cover the areas of Cronulla and Miranda and down to Heathcote.

Mr and Mrs Clanfield have four children and two grandchildren.

"We have attended the church here for the past five years and are looking forward to being based here full-time," Mr Clanfield said.

"It is a great community. There is something about the shire. Just walking around you can feel the sense of community."

Mr Clanfield said that this sense of community could be seen in the shire's generous response to the Salvo's Christmas appeal.

"We really want to say thank you to the community which has been incredible supportive and generous to the Salvation Army — especially last Christmas," he said.

"The support we have got from the community through Westfield has been great. Commuters were particularly generous at Jannali railway station."
