THE Young Volunteer Award has gone to Josh Doyle, 22, of Oyster Bay, for his services to a local charity.
He won the NRMA's prestigious prize for his volunteer work with See Change Community Services.
Mr Doyle a builder by trade was picked from 450 other nominations for providing time and building equipment for more than five years.
Nine other volunteers from the St George and Sutherland Shire received a nomination for the award.
An example of Mr Doyle's work was a ``backyard blitz'' for a gentleman who drove the local church bus.
"I headed a group of 40 to 50 young people working over three days on this unimaginable backyard,'' he said.
"We ended up removing two tonnes of scrap metal and 10 tonnes of soil.''
For his efforts, Mr Doyle received a $5000 donation for See Change Community Services, as well as a five-night package to Brisbane's Mirambeena Travelodge Resort and a three Theme Park Fun Pass.
Mr Doyle said he was bewildered when he first learnt of the award, as he had been nominated anonymously. Now he "can't wait'' for the trip to Queensland.
"I'm so busy, I'm struggling to find time for planning the trip.
"But the real prize, to put $5000 back into the charity, is unreal.''
NRMA Motoring & Services deputy president Michael Tynan praised Mr Doyle's work.
"Without meaning to be, Josh has become an inspiration to those around him with his down-to-earth attitude towards helping people and getting projects done,'' he said.
Mr Doyle will receive his award at the NRMA head office on Thursday, November 12.
