BONJOUR! Comment allez-vous? A little bit of France has established itself in Sutherland Shire with the launch of the Francophone Association of Southern Sydney.
What began in 2007 as a casual get-together in the lounge rooms of native French speakers led to a playgroup for French-speaking children and now the formation of the Francophone Association.
President Peggy Lassauniere said there had been a good roll-up at the inaugural meeting last month, with 40 adults and 15 children.
Mrs Lassauniere said this had been an unexpectedly high number and that the association was happy with the response.
"It really just started as a group of mothers getting together to show our children that they weren't the only ones who spoke French, and it's just gone from there,'' she said.
The group aims to encourage French speaking and greater cultural awareness for children, native speakers and even those who are just learning the language.
The association is the second in Sydney and was established with the help of St Philip's Anglican Church in Caringbah and of longtime resident Bob Head, who only recently started learning French.
At 4pm every Thursday, a weekly playgroup helps children to learn and improve their language skills. Then there is conversational sessions for adults and children until 6pm.
The association has also planned several gatherings.
The first will be a visit to the Sculptures by the Sea at Bondi this Saturday, November 7.
