IT HAS taken 18 long months, but the Kirrawee dog park refurbishment is finally complete.
The work, completed using funds raised by Sutherland Shire Lions and Lioness clubs, includes a gazebo, stainless steel water bowls, a new entrance and a fenced off area for smaller dogs.
Sutherland Shire Lioness Club secretary Helen Rae said the refurbishment was a huge improvement for the park, which gets lots of use, despite being rundown before the work.
"I had to meet workers here during the building and even at 6.30 in the morning there were two, three dogs here,'' she said.
"The workmen used to say to me they couldn't believe how many people came to the park.''
Gymea resident Michelle Lang, creator of the pet waste disposal business Poo Patrol, donated two poo bag disposal units.
Miss Lang said she would check the dispensers each week to make sure they were working properly and were stocked with bags. She said the dog park was important because it provided a place for dogs to exercise and stretch their legs.
"A lot of people live in small homes with small yards and you can take your dog for a walk on the leash but they also need to interact with other dogs and be part of a pack,'' she said.
