AMBULANCE paramedics have advised householders to be aware that there has been a rise in funnel web and redback spider activity this summer.
Male funnel webs roam for a mate in the warmer months and redbacks are generally more active in warm conditions.
Both can give a painful, and in some cases deadly, bite but require different treatment for the wound.
Funnel webs are large, plump, black creatures whose bite can induce pain, mouth numbness, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweating and salivation.
The Ambulance Service recommends that anyone bitten by a funnel web should a pressure bandage over the bite site and wind the bandage up the limb.
A pressure bandage should not be applied to a redback bite, which requires a cold pack as the venom moves slowly through the body.
Symptoms of a redback bite include severe pain, sweating, muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting.
Treatment for any spider bite should include immobilising limbs to prevent venom from spreading to other areas of the body.
