QUALITY of life issues were high on the agenda when Simon Lewis addressed the October meeting of the St George/Sutherland Support Group of Parkinson's NSW recently.
Dr Lewis, a senior lecturer of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Sydney, discussed the DASH program.
DASH, which stands for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and hallucinations, is a pilot program being developed by Dr Lewis and Dr Sharon Naismith from the Brain and Mind Research Institute.
Dr Lewis's research looks at more than just possible physical causes of Parkinson's.
Psychological and lifestyle elements are factored into determining probable causes of the disease.
The project also focuses on dementia in Parkinson's and aims to raise awareness of the disease among GPs, health professionals and the wider community.
The group has more than 120 members from southern Sydney and is involved in seminars and support with regular carer's meetings.
