Rockdale needs to pull in its waste

28 May, 2009 05:00 AM
ROCKDALE residents and business owners are appalled at the amount of rubbish strewn around streets but the council says illegal dumping has decreased.

Resident Dean Crawford said he was disgusted at rubbish mounting in back streets and areas surrounding McDonald's, Rockdale.

"Everywhere you go you see empty McDonald's cups and garbage along the side streets,'' he said.

"Council evidently does not clean these areas as it is out of sight from the main traffic and public. "There are insufficient garbage bins for customer use.''

A McDonald's Rockdale spokeswoman said staff undertake a litter patrol daily in a one-block radius around the restaurant.

"Staff also carry out a check of the restaurant and car park every 30 minutes to ensure that the areas are clean and tidy,'' she said.

"There are four garbage bins in the car park so that customers can dispose of their rubbish responsibly.''

A Rockdale Council spokesman said illegal dumping had decreased by 50 per cent in the past seven years because of education programs, introduction of a fourth clean-up day and a call-out service.

"To counteract illegal street littering, council implemented a street-sweeping service that cleanses each street twice a month,'' he said.

"Council has increased litter and cleansing patrols in common areas, such as shopping centres and train station car parks. People who dump in the same spot will be caught and that is the reason why they are now very random in dumping their rubbish.''

How can we clean up the streets of Rockdale?

What a joke this council is, a street sweeper is their answer to ignorant people throwing their rubbish in the street. What good is a street sweeper when the street is full of cars, bring back the bloke and his cart who actually walks the streets and sweeps up the rubbish. Also how about getting some more rangers on the job to fine those who continue to litter and finally get someone into the local schools to educate the children that littering is an offense and that people do not want to eventually end up living in a pig stye

Lies, Lies Lies!!!!!! There is no way Done St, Barden St, Parts of Station St, Mitchell St, Wollongong Rd (just to name a few) in Arncliffe are cleaned twice a month. There is rubbish in those streets that has been there for years. As Robert Moffatt said a Street Sweeper is useless if the street is full of cars. I have been corresponding with Rockdale council for years and I am yet to see any real improvement. Parts of the Rockdale Council area would be the most littered in Sydney.

I agree. Streetsweeping machines are useless in dealing with the problem. Litter isn't confined to gutters; it's in parks, gardens, laneways, carparks, waterways and so on. I don't think education's working, although it's important. I think it's time to bring back deposits on containers. People won't be so ready to discard packaging when they can collect 10 or 20 cents on a container. Kids will go collecting litter as we used to do in the 1960s and pocket the coins. It's also time for all retailers to start charging for plastic shopping bags as Bunnings, and IKEA have done and now Target is doing. Then people might save them for reuse or might bring sturdier bags for shopping. We need incentives and rewards because punishment isn't working; besides there's no one around to police littering anyway.

I am also concerned about the litter problem, I use public transport often and spend allot of time outdoors and found in my experience that the litter problem is bad on the pavement and round-about at Rockdale Plaza, and in parking areas overlooking the bay. Mostly it is take-away containers dumped where the food was eaten although there are bins provided. My suggestion is everyone keeping an eye out and correcting people who litter. As that is the only way we can keep Australia clean.
