ROCKDALE residents and business owners are appalled at the amount of rubbish strewn around streets but the council says illegal dumping has decreased.
Resident Dean Crawford said he was disgusted at rubbish mounting in back streets and areas surrounding McDonald's, Rockdale.
"Everywhere you go you see empty McDonald's cups and garbage along the side streets,'' he said.
"Council evidently does not clean these areas as it is out of sight from the main traffic and public. "There are insufficient garbage bins for customer use.''
A McDonald's Rockdale spokeswoman said staff undertake a litter patrol daily in a one-block radius around the restaurant.
"Staff also carry out a check of the restaurant and car park every 30 minutes to ensure that the areas are clean and tidy,'' she said.
"There are four garbage bins in the car park so that customers can dispose of their rubbish responsibly.''
A Rockdale Council spokesman said illegal dumping had decreased by 50 per cent in the past seven years because of education programs, introduction of a fourth clean-up day and a call-out service.
"To counteract illegal street littering, council implemented a street-sweeping service that cleanses each street twice a month,'' he said.
"Council has increased litter and cleansing patrols in common areas, such as shopping centres and train station car parks. People who dump in the same spot will be caught and that is the reason why they are now very random in dumping their rubbish.''
