THE RTA has withdrawn infringements that were issued to motorists travelling south through the speed camera on King Georges Road, during school zone hours, between August 3 and 30, 2007, except for those travelling above the non-school zone default speed limit of 60kmh.
The State Debt Recovery Office had been instructed by the RTA to withdraw 4915 fines. Last month, the lawyer representing about 1000 motorists who received fines, Dennis Miralis, said he believed there were at least 10,000 motorists affected.
An RTA spokeswoman said that some motorists entering King Georges Road from side streets during school zone hours between these dates felt they were unaware the speed camera was in a school zone because of inadequate signage in the side streets.
``As the RTA was not in a position to establish which drivers had entered from the side streets, it believed the fairest course of action to pursue was withdrawing all infringements issued to southbound vehicles,'' the spokeswoman said.
Infringements were withdrawn if the vehicle was travelling southbound, the detection was between August 3 and 30, detection was during school zone hours 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on gazetted school days, the vehicle was travelling over the 40kmh school zone speed limit but below the 60kmh out-of-school-zone-hour speed limit.
