AFTER 52 years of preparing 936,000 sandwiches for staff and visitors, the Sutherland Hospital Kiosk has finally raised more than $2 million.
The kiosk is run by 84 volunteers whose tireless work has helped provide the hospital with more than 420 items of life-saving medical equipment.
In 2011, $152,000 was raised to purchase heat machines for the operating theatres and portable monitors for the emergency department.
Kiosk president Margaret McKerihan, of Cronulla, said volunteering at the kiosk gave people "friendship and purpose to a busy day".
"The staff and visitors are important and we love looking after them," she said. "When you see your hard work improving the quality of life for a patient it's a wonderful feeling."
Volunteer of 34 years, Pat Markham, of Cronulla, said it was incredibly rewarding to help others.
The director of operations at St George and Sutherland hospitals, Cath Whitehurst, said the community was fortunate to have such a hard-working group of volunteers.
"It's a credit to the women who created the kiosk and the volunteers who have supported this endeavour since 1960 to have raised so much money for their local hospital," Ms Whitehurst said.
